Diaper rashes are unavoidable, but there are things we can do to lessen their frequency and mitigate discomfort.
Diaper Rashes
Keep in mind - you don’t have to use commercial baby wipes with every diaper change. Save them for the poopy diapers or try a mild soap. For the pee-only diaper changes, soft cloths with warm water are completely sufficient and go a long way in preventing bacteria build-up on those cute little bums.
When your little one gets the inevitable diaper rash, here are some tips to help comfort them and help the rash heal faster:
- In addition to the warm water wipes, try soaking them in the tub after poopy diapers instead of having to wipe repeatedly to get them clean.
- Expose their booty to air. Dryness prevents yeast from growing. (Plus, naked babies = happy babies. Win-win!)
- Add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of baking soda to their baths, up to 3 times per day if needed.
- Use a protective or barrier ointment during diaper changes, such as A+D, Desitin or petroleum jelly. A thick layer is the way to go!
- If you’ve been dealing with a bright red rash for more than 3 days and it’s not responding to any of the above treatment, it could be a yeast infection. If you suspect yeast, apply Lotrimin cream (over-the-counter) 3 times per day.
I wish you and your new baby all the best.
