Health Tips for the Holidays

It can be hard to think about staying healthy over the holidays. Here are 7 hacks to make enjoying the holidays while still being mindful a little easier.

Just when you've gotten the school year under control, the nutritious lunches fine tuned and not coming back from school uneaten, the kids back on their bikes and bedtime somewhat stable... the holidays arrive and give you a whole new set of healthy family challenges.

From sugar-filled cookie smuggling to past-their-bedtime holiday movies to winter weather keeping everyone inside, cozy and inactive, it's not always easy to stay healthy during the holidays. And while there is no good time for your family to be taken down by a bug, I'd wager to say the next few weeks would be the worst.

That's why so many experts have weighed in to offer advice on healthy holidays.

1. Get Enough Sleep

Adults need at least seven hours of sleep every night. So go to bed early, or sleep in. But if you’ve got a small child -  good luck!

2. Get Active

The holidays are the perfect time to get family together for fun activities like hikes, long walks, football games, you name it. Just get moving and you’ll feel better for it.

3. Eat Healthy

It may not always be the easiest to reach for the healthy snack during the holidays, but perhaps try balancing the sugary and sweet with something green.

4. Rethink Your Drink

Don’t forget to drink lots of water. Occasionally opting for water over another alcoholic beverage can help reduce calories and overall keep you plenty hydrated.

5. Prevent the Flu

This may sound hard, but alas if you get your flu shot, are adamant about washing your hands regularly and wipe down surfaces frequently, your chances of getting sick significantly decrease.

6. Learn Your Family Health History

While swapping stories and relaxing with family over the holidays, why not learn some of the family health history. The more you know, the more you can be prepared.

7. Bundle up to Stay Dry and Warm

Wear appropriate outdoor clothing: light, warm layers, gloves, hats, scarves, and waterproof boots.

Of course, even we at Kinsa condone the occasional late night Polar Express watching, snuggly lazing in our jammies and snacking on gingerbread men.
