Which Thermometer is Best for Infants and Babies?

Checking your baby’s temperature should be an easy process. We did the homework to find a list of thermometers in the market for comparison.

Fevers are typically the body’s natural response to defend against infection. But what's the best thermometer to accurately get your baby's temperature? As a new parent, the thermometer market can be overwhelming. We are obviously biased but we genuinely believe Kinsa is your best choice for thermometers.

Digital Stick Thermometer

The digital stick thermometer, like the Kinsa QuickCare Thermometer, is the most common that you'll find in your local drugstore. It can be used in 3 ways: oral (mouth), rectal (bottom), and axillary (armpit). According to Mayo Clinic, oral and rectal readings are the most accurate. Rectal readings are especially recommended for infants 3 months or younger.

Digital Ear Thermometer

Kinsa Smart Ear Thermometer

Ear thermometers, like the Kinsa Smart Ear Thermometer, are one of the best options for fidgety children and babies 6 months and older. These thermometers measure the temperature inside the ear canal in 1-second flat. They cost more than your standard digital stick thermometer, but you make up for a lot of time (and headaches!) by using this super quick gadget to accurately gauge your child's temperature.

Digital Forehead Thermometer

Forehead thermometers, like the new Kinsa QuickScan Thermometer, are all the rage since COVID joined the party. This is an excellent choice for those pesky middle-of-the-night temps when you want to check on the baby without waking him or her!

Mercury Thermometer

Mercury Thermometer

Unless you have one lying around, it may be harder to find one of these almost-relics. And either way, it is highly recommended you replace it with a more modern version. Risk of mercury exposure since these thermometers are easily breakable. Note: Do not toss in trash as mercury is considered hazardous waste!

Temperature Strips

Temporal Thermometer

This option is almost like a mood ring for your forehead. They're quick, easy to use and are also the least invasive option out there. Unfortunately they're not as reliable for use with children since temperature readings may be affected by the surrounding environment.

Wearable Thermometers

Wearable Thermometer

Wearables are all too common in this day and age. Quite a few options are available if you’re trying to consistently monitor your baby’s temperature. These gadgets can be costly and there are questions around their accuracy for temperature readings.

Remember, consult your pediatrician or family doctor if your child has a temperature above 100.4 degrees fahrenheit or follow these tips to help bring down your child's temperature at home first.
